Nutrition for Childhood and Beyond

From infancy to adolescence, and beyond, our children are in a constant state of growth and cognitive development. That growth doesn’t happen on its own, however; it requires fuel, and that means vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Of course, childhood nutrition has to have a few more layers to it. When providing nourishment for a child whose body and brain are still developing, it’s important to make sure you’re feeding them the right kinds of foods.

What’s Proper Nutrition All About?

The first thing to understand about childhood nutrition, and nutrition for anyone, is that simply eating food doesn’t count as proper nutrition, and it isn’t enough just to take in calories. Your child should be getting the right foods containing the correct vitamins, which will allow for appropriate brain development.

The right nutrition for your child starts, as you may have guessed, when that child is still developing in the womb. During these months and the infancy period after birth, your child should be getting enough iodine and iron, for instance, to allow for brain development.

Proper childhood nutrition is all about making sure you, as a pregnant mother, are eating the healthy foods your baby needs while developing and then feeding the child the right baby food after birth. Remember also, if you’re breastfeeding, your own diet still has a big impact on your child’s nutritional intake. If your own health needs aren’t being met, it will affect the quality of the milk you produce.

If a baby is deprived of proper nutrition before or after birth, their body could make fewer cells, which can impair normal development. If a slightly older child is deprived of the right nutrition, their cells might not grow to be as large or sophisticated as they should.

What Does Proper Nutrition Affect?

As parents, what do you have to worry about if your child doesn’t get the proper nutrition?

For one thing, children who are undernourished as infants can turn out generally smaller than their peers who received proper nutrition. Undernourished children also have a greater risk of struggling in school when they get older with school work.

Different Types of Nutrient Deficiencies

Nutrient deficiency can happen from not eating enough food, but it can also happen from not eating a wide variety of foods. When a child consumes only certain foods and not others, it could result in under-nutrition. This kind of nutrient deficiency can stunt a child’s development all around and lead to school and career struggles, mental issues, and health problems later in life.

The same can be said of over-nutrition, in which parents feed their children too many foods that are not nutritious and don’t add anything to a healthy diet. Fast food can be said to play a large role in this. On a high-fat diet of burgers, fries, and other fried foods, a child is deprived of proper nutrients and subjected to an unhealthy lifestyle that can lead to obesity and heart disease.

If a child does not get enough proteins from lean meats, fish, or nuts, they can become anemic and will be tired all of the time.  They also need enough variety in their diet, including fruits and vegetables, so they are getting enough fiber to promote healthy bowel movements and decrease constipation. In addition, they need enough calcium through dairy products to promote healthy bones and teeth.

In all cases, it is best to feed children steady diets of whole grains, fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and high-fiber foods to ensure they receive proper nutrition. These foods taken in over time will give children the best opportunities to grow and develop as they should.
