Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding in Public

Chances are, you will be leaving the house at some point after you have your baby!  So, you are going to have to deal with breastfeeding in public. That’s great, but it doesn’t mean that everyone is accepting of it or that you will feel comfortable, especially those first few times you do it!

Breastfeeding is your right

First of all, remember that you have the right to breastfeed your baby WHEREVER and WHENEVER you want and whenever your baby is hungry.

Second, keep in mind that while you are breastfeeding, YOU end up seeing more of your breast than anyone else does!  Try breastfeeding in front of a mirror and you’ll see what I mean!

Third, I usually recommend you try the “breastfeeding in public” routine BEFORE venturing out.  Scout out the area you’ll be and find some spots that you feel comfortable with.

“You don’t need to respond to anyone who criticizes you for breastfeeding. If you feel unsafe, move away from that person and look for people who can support you. ”

– Jeffery Kile, MD

Some tips to help you get started

  1. Wear comfortable clothes that allow easy access to your breasts.
  2. Use a blanket around your shoulders to cover anything you don’t want to expose to the public.
  3. Try breastfeeding your baby in a sling.  This type of device makes it easier to keep baby comfortable and close to your body.  Always check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission for warnings before buying a sling.
  4. You can use lounge areas or dressing rooms in stores if you prefer to breastfeed in private.
  5. It helps to breastfeed your baby BEFORE he/she becomes fussy, so you have time to get comfortable to feed. You will learn your baby’s hunger cues over time.

Be proud of your commitment

If someone criticizes you for breastfeeding in public, you have the law on your side! You don’t need to respond to anyone who criticizes you for breastfeeding.  If you feel unsafe, move away from that person and look for people who can support you.

Remember, it’s not possible to stay home ALL of the time, nor should you!!

Be proud of your commitment to breastfeeding.  Talk to other breastfeeding moms about your feelings. It might be helpful to know ahead of time what other moms have done in similar situations!
